TOPIC: Various Types Of Industry Waste That Destroy The Nature Environment: Wounded Flora And Fauna
Product Concept
We emphasise on self-creativity and development. Our product is derived from a simple idea to make a piece of furniture that can act like an accessory or lamp. It is derived by combining ideas that use waste materials to show or depict the animals that could be endangered because of this waste pollution.
As the picture showed, the ice cream sticks are the base of the artwork. We collected ice-cream sticks from our friends and family and stuck them together to make it as a base. Then, we drew an outline of the animal we wanted, and started collecting waste such as plastic bottles, aluminium cans, paper boxes and so on. We cut it into pieces and paste it within the outline based on the composition we want. Hence, we encourage people to think creatively, and we hope that we can contribute to the environment and inspire people around us to be as creative as possible and at the same time be aware of protecting the environment.
Problem Statement
Humans are generating too much trash and cannot deal with it in a sustainable way and it directly affects many ecosystems and species.
Malaysia is tracking global trends in both the overall generation of plastic waste and the consumption of single-use plastics and since 2017 has been the world’s largest importer of plastic waste. According to research, 6.3 billion metric tons of plastic waste had been produced. The amount of plastic that had been recycled was about 9%. However, the awareness of plastic waste was not firm enough to change the current situation.
On the other hand, in the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency had calculated that the total generation of municipal solid waste in 2017 was 267.8 million tons, which was a 5.7 million increase compared to 2015. While the world generates 2.01 billion tons of municipal solid waste annually and most of it is not managed in an environmentally safe manner. This would definitely have an impact on wildlife and ecosystems, as well as disrupting natural habitats. Animals are going extinct, and ecosystems are being destroyed.
SDG Goal
We are focusing on goals number 14 and 15, which are about life below water and on land. It is to protect, restore, and promote long-term sustainability and conservation of the ocean, the land, and all of its inhabitants.
Solution
We are upcycling unused items and transforming it into a usable product. Therefore, we are now introducing you to our campaign “Think it Creative, Make it Creative”, to create awareness of our topic by hosting workshop and challenge.
Workshop/ Challenges
Our “Think it Creative, Make it Creative” campaign will be divided into two sections, which are workshop and challenge. We want to make sure that people get to experience and enjoy the joy of making upcycling products. A challenge will be held to grab people's attention. Templates will be provided for the people as they need to collect unused materials around them and based on their own creativity to create a decoration (fauna or flora). As for the workshop, simple items will be created as a decoration to promote the upcycling concept.
What We Aim
We are aiming to ask people around us and possibly around the world to take part in our challenge, hashtag, and share our campaign information by promoting it through social media. We wanted to create awareness as much as possible to save the animals and plants by reducing daily waste/ upcycling daily waste.
